Department Spotlight – Social Studies Department
As an ongoing project, many students from Arapahoe High School have teamed up with Project Education Sudan to build a secondary boarding school in the state of Maar, Sudan. This year for the second time, students solicited auction items for a Gala Dinner and Silent Auction. This year’s guest speaker was Victoria Butler, a correspondent for NPR and Time Magazine, as well as co-author of the book, Sudan: The Land and the People. Victoria’s husband, Timothy Carney, was the last standing ambassador to Sudan. The event was a huge success. A team from Project Education Sudan gave a report on their recent trip, where they finished building the school and Arapahoe has been so vital in supporting, they even installed solar panels and were able to send AHS students an e-mail from the site. This year, students helped raise over $10,000 to sustain the school, which AHS students named Hope Academy. The Amnesty International club would like to thank all those who help to support this cause. To see photos of the building, see the bulletin board by room C-6.
